If at first you don’t succeed...

There’s something new to discover every day at nursery or primary school. This is where so many signals are set for the journey into later life. Teachers encourage children to use pens, pencils and crayons correctly, because an incorrect grip, for instance, is difficult to rectify later and can have adverse health effects in grown-up life. This is far from easy: teachers have very little chance of checking the way each individual child draws or writes. Many children are slow to develop the motor functions and need to be helped repeatedly, or can’t understand complex instructions. Why worry about the correct hold, when what you’re trying to put on paper is far more interesting?
